Best Kitchen Green Cleaning Hacks

Tired of cleaning your kitchen with harmful common household toxic "products"? These chemicals can be harmful to your family's health! Throw those plastic gloves away! It is time to start cleaning the Green way! You can create safe, eco-friendly cleaning products using essential oils and other natural and inexpensive ingredients you can find at any natural grocery store.

Learn how to clean your kitchen the natural way!

Learn how essential oils and other natural ingredients can do most of the work for you! Learn some super easy DIY recipes that make cleaning very easy! They’re made from things you probably already have in your kitchen.

Peppermint is a cleaning favorite, because of its invigorating smell and its powerful antibacterial properties. Add to vinegar and/or castile soap to disinfect your kitchen surfaces. Peppermint is also a natural pest deterrent and it also purifies air!  Mix peppermint with lemon for a refreshing smell! It also blends well with lavender, eucalyptus, and rosemary. You can even clean up your mouth with Peppermint!

For an air freshener that also deters ants and spiders mix 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray along cracks and crevices or wherever ants are seen.

There is a good reason why many stove cleaners smell of oranges. It’s a perfect degreaser! Saturate your greasy stove top with orange oil, and wipe it up easily. It leaves a pleasant citrus smell to boot.

Homemade Orange Degreaser
Just mix the following ingredients together and add them to a clean glass spray bottle:
1 1/2 cups of warm water
1 1/2 tsp. of dish liquid
20 drops of orange essential oils

Lavender is more than just a delightful, summery scent. The essential oil of this fragrant plant has disinfectant properties, and its cleaning powers have long been known. Even before the antimicrobial properties of lavender were discovered, it was used for cleaning purposes. The word lavender itself comes from lavare, meaning “to wash.” Try cleaning with lavender by making our Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner with Lavender recipe, or simply by adding a few drops of essential oil to any cleaning products you already make, such as vinegar diluted in water for cleaning floors.

Lavender pairs well with another common natural cleaner, vinegar. Just add 4-5 drops of lavender to your vinegar cleaning mixture for its natural antibacterial properties – and for a more bearable scent. Harness lavender’s soothing scent in homemade dish soap to elevate washing dishes.

Eucalyptus not only cleans and freshens the air, it disinfects surfaces. This oil has excellent anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious properties. Use liberally to cleans surfaces – it has a clean smell and it is great for stinky jobs in the kitchen!

This natural germicide is a powerful dust mite buster. Eucalyptus leaves and essential oil are great in cupboards to deter pests.

Burnt popcorn? Fried fish? Get rid of the stink in the air by diffusing Eucalyptus!

Prevent / Remove mold – Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a cup of hot water – use to wipe down all the surfaces in your fridge or wherever you’re prone to finding mold.

The Protective Blend is one of the most popular and versatile essential oils blends. The combination of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils is an active component in a first line of defense for immune support. It is a non-toxic and superb way to clean up surfaces in so many ways: wipe public doorknobs, clean children’s hands when traveling, clean public computer keyboards, use in classrooms for desks as well as cleaning your home!

Got Rugs in Your Kitchen?
Combine 20 drops essential oil and 3 cups baking soda. Cover, let mixture rest overnight. Sprinkle on carpets or upholstery to freshen and deodorize. Wait several hours or overnight. Vacuum

There is actually a whole line of products developed around the Protective Blend – THAT is how powerful this blend is!

Does your garbage disposal need a little refreshing? With everything that goes into the disposal, odds are that odors could be accumulating in there. Try this simple DIY recipe to make your own garbage disposal refreshers to help freshen, clean, and deodorize your garbage disposal.

What You Need:
2 cups baking soda
1 cup salt
1/3 cup liquid castile soap
10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
10 drops Melaleuca Essential Oil

Directions
1. Combine baking soda and salt into glass bowl
2. Add castile soap and essential oil into mixture
3. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time while stirring with hands until it forms into the consistency of “damp sand”. It should stay together when you press it together. If you add too much water just add some more baking soda and salt until the consistency is right.
4. Grab a tablespoon measurement device and scoop packed spoonfuls onto parchment paper.
5. Once the mixture has been scooped, let dry for 24 hours or until they are hard. One batch should make about 36 garbage disposal refreshers.
6. Put into glass jar and use the next time you do dishes! Just put 1-3 refreshers into the garbage disposal and turn it on. You will immediately smell the refreshing Lemon essential oil.

This is probably one of the grossest jobs in the kitchen – Cleaning that baked on sick mess on the bottom of the oven! Give your oven some lovin’!

Oven Cleaner - This cleaner replaces the harsh fumes of conventional oven cleaners with the fresh scent of lemon essential oil.

1 1/2 cups baking soda

2. Using a brush, paint the interior surfaces of your oven, avoiding the heating elements.
3. Close oven door and wait 8 to 12 hours. Note: DO NOT turn oven on.
4. Using a damp sponge and warm water, wipe oven clean.

Ok mamas, how many of you can relate to this? You put some soup in a pan on the stove and then head upstairs to get your little one up from their nap or change a diaper….then you start to hear the big hissing and scalding sounds coming from the kitchen. Oops….I forgot about that soup on the stove…and it is boiling over…all….over…the stove!  You go to assess the damage and see the goopiest, gunkiest concoction that you could have burned on the stove stop….because it was tomato soup!  Here is your solution!

Stove Top Cleaner
¼ cup baking soda
¼ cup table salt
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons water
5 drops Purification Blend
Mix together in a glass bowl until they form a paste. Spread it all over the stove top and burners. Leave it on for 15 minutes or longer for hard-to-remove stains. Using a sponge, scrub the mixture into the grime. Remove excess cleaner and wipe surface clean.

Deodorizing Garbage Pail Pods
Sure, we know that a trash can isn't going to end up smelling like a field of lilac trees, but is it too much to ask that it not smell up our entire house? Trash can odors have a way of drifting throughout the entire house. It may take a little while of following the smell to locate the source.  But usually, it is the trash that is causing the entire house to smell a little icky. So how do we have a convenient place to throw out trash and still keep trash can odors at bay?

These biodegradable pods can be placed at the bottom of the garbage pail or taped to the underside of the lid to fight odors and keep things fresh. These also could be used in diaper pails or litter boxes!
Ingredients
2 cups baking soda
5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops Melaleuca Essential Oil
10 drops Wild Orange Essential Oil
1 cup distilled water
Directions
1. In a mixing bowl, combine baking soda and essential oils. Mix until completely blended.
2. Gradually add the water while mixing, just until the mixture forms stable, moist clumps.
3. Portion and press the mixture into silicone baking mold or flexible ice cube tray.
4. Allow dry 24 to 48 hours.
5. Pop the pods out of the mold and store in an airtight container.
7. To use: Tape 1 pod onto underside of trash pail lid. Replace each time you take out trash.

Dishwasher powder
You probably use dishwasher detergent all the time, but did you know you can make your own homemade dishwasher detergent for a fraction of the cost? It’s actually fairly easy too and, as a bonus, homemade dishwasher detergents are more eco-friendly than most commercial brands. Here is just recipe:
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda
3 Tbsp salt
10 drops essential oil
Mix all ingredients well, store in glass container. Use 2 TBSP per load

Air Freshener
Commercial air fresheners can bring many unwanted toxins and chemicals into your home. There are, however, completely safe and natural alternatives for keeping your air fresh. We came up with a quick and simple tutorial to make your own air freshener that has only two ingredients—baking soda and essential oils! Read on to get started, and your home will be smelling fresh in no time.

What You Need:
1 small Mason jar with a lid and band
1/4 cup baking soda
5-6 drops of your favorite essential oil
Hammer
Small screwdriver or nail

Directions:
1. Put 1/4 cup baking soda into a small jar. Add 5-6 drops of your favorite dōTERRA essential oil or blend.
Recommended Essential Oils: Grounding Blend, Cassia, Geranium, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Protective Blend, Cleansing Blend, or Wild Orange.
2. Put piece of fabric on jar and seal with band.
Editor’s Tip: Add some style by drawing a design onto a piece of paper and then securing the design on top of the lid with a strong tape around the edges and poking holes along the pattern.
3. You’re done! Just place the jar in an area you would like to keep smelling fresh. This could include: the bathroom, near a garbage can, in your closet, near your dirty clothes, etc. Shake the jar often to activate the fresh scent. If the scent starts to fade, simply add 2-3 more drops of essential oil into the jar.

FOAM HAND SOAP

You can use any empty foaming hand soap bottle you have laying around the house or you can purchase a new one.  Mix and match your favorite essential oils to create your own custom soap. The options are endless! Check out this blog on how to make your own Foaming Hand Soap!

Spring Cleaning With Essential Oils

It’s time to put the green in your clean! Common household cleaners contain toxic chemicals that can be harmful to your health. You can create safe, eco-friendly cleaning products using essential oils and other natural and inexpensive ingredients you can find at any natural grocery store.

Learn how to get your natural clean on!

Learn how essential oils and other natural ingredients can do most of the work for you! Learn some super easy DIY recipes that make cleaning very easy! They’re made from things you probably already have in your kitchen.

Are you looking to deep clean your house, but the thought of using conventional cleaners with sketchy ingredients makes you less than thrilled? You may be interested to learn that many essential oils offer you the same caliber of clean, with nothing gross left behind.  Gone are the days where you have to worry about donning a mask and rubber gloves to clean your countertops. Chemical residue is an afterthought with these quick and easy DIY cleaning recipes! Let’s start learning about the power of cleaning with essential oils!

You probably have most (if not all) of this already in your kitchen:

Baking Soda - Instead of your typical cleaning spray, use baking soda. This is a well-known deodorizer, but it will also whiten surfaces and cut grease.

Unscented Liquid Castile Soap - Combine with baking soda for an amazing tub scrub or add a few tablespoons to your mop water with a citrus essential oil. You can find this in your local health-food store and online. Unscented is usually best for most purposes.

White Vinegar - Vinegar also cuts grease, deodorizes, and dissolves mineral deposits. To cut the smell, add in a few drops of Lemon essential oil.

Borax - Gives more cleansing power. Borax disinfects, whitens, cuts grease, and deodorizes. **Although it is natural, borax is toxic when ingested, and can cause skin irritation. Keep away from children, pets, and food preparation areas.

Wood Furniture Polish
Is your wood furniture or flooring starting to look dull and lifeless?

Wood furniture is an investment and it is important to take care of it. Although polishing wood furniture should only be done every couple months, it is important to continually keep it clean by dusting it or wiping it with a damp wet microfiber cloth.

Commercial wood polishes may look great 1-2 days after polishing, but initial impressive results can quickly fade and ultimately damage the wood. Not only are they harsh on wood furniture, they also contain chemicals and artificial fragrances that can cause irritation, or worse, health problems when proper safety precautions are not taken while using them.

Bring back the shine to your favorite tables, counter tops, floors, and more with this simple recipe for homemade wood polish with essential oils.

What You Need:
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup vinegar
10 drops essential oils (try Wild Orange or Lemon)
8 ounce glass spray bottle (you can purchase one here)
Directions:
1. Add 10 drops of essential oil into the glass spray bottle.
2. Add olive oil and vinegar.
3. Shake well before each use. Apply to a microfiber cloth and wipe wood surfaces clean. Repeat every 2-3 months or as often as needed.

Or Try This:
Add ¼ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup olive oil, and 10 drops lemon essential oil to a glass spray bottle. Shake to combine, apply to a microfiber cloth, and wipe wood surface clean. Repeat every 2-3 months or as often as needed.

Mirror & Window Cleaner
Take the risk out of household cleansers by making your own cleaners at home. They are affordable, easy, eco-friendly, and just as effective (if not more) than store bought cleaners.
What You Need:
16-ounce spray bottle
1 1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup distilled water
8 drops of any citrus oil of your choice (could use Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, or a combination)
Directions:
Add vinegar, water, and essential oil(s) to spray bottle and shake. You are ready to clean!

2. Using a brush, paint the interior surfaces of your oven, avoiding the heating elements.
3. Close oven door and wait 8 to 12 hours. Note: DO NOT turn oven on.
4. Using a damp sponge and warm water, wipe oven clean.

Stove Top Cleaner
Mix ¼ cup baking soda, ¼ cup table salt, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons water and 5 drops Cleansing Blend together in a glass bowl until they form a paste. Spread it all over the stove top and burners. Leave it on for 15 minutes or longer for hard-to-remove stains. Using a sponge, scrub the mixture into the grime. Remove excess cleaner and wipe surface clean.

Refrigerator & Microwave Cleaner
Add 1 cup white vinegar, 2 cups hot water & 15 drops of Lemon essential oil to a glass spray bottle. Spray mixture inside fridge or microwave, then scrub and wipe using damp cloth.

All-Purpose Grease Cutter
Saturate any sticky surface with Wild Orange essential oil and wipe away.

Wood Floor Cleaner
Add 2 cups distilled water, 2 Tbsp. white vinegar, and 10 drops lemon essential oil to a glass spray bottle. Shake to combine, squirt a little on the floor, and mop up with a damp mop.
